Jerry Dale Humphrey

Herrin- Jerry D. Humphrey, 83, of Herrin, passed away at 9:50 PM, Monday, March 25, 2024 at Shawnee Senior Living in Herrin.

Jerry was born on December 5, 1940 in Herrin to William H. “Bill” and Helen Lorene (Hatfield) Humphrey. He married Joyce Ann Skelcher on October 27, 1962 in Herrin.  She survives. 

He served his country honorably while enlisted in the United States Navy during Vietnam.  Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began a 30 year career in local mines.  He retired in 1994 as Top Electrician for Old Ben #24.

He was a very hardworking man who sacrificed much for his family.  He was a Christian man and a member of Bryan Street Baptist Church in Herrin.  In his spare time, he enjoyed travelling with family, fishing for catfish in local strip pits and spending time outdoors hunting for deer, squirrels and rabbits.  He loved time spent with his grandchildren and playing chess (longtime game with Dr. Castro) and computer games as well as listening to gospel music by Jimmy Swaggert and Elvis Presley.

Survivors include his loving wife- Joyce Ann Humphrey of Herrin; son- Jimmy Humphrey and Jamie Price of Herrin; daughter- Dawn Glass and husband Anthony of Herrin; four grandchildren- Brance Crawford, Brittany Downing, Brandon Crawford and Adriana Humphrey; 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Herrin City Cemetery.  Rev. Don Colson will officiate.  Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin and Carterville VFW and American Legion Posts.  Visitation will be from 12:30 until time of service, Thursday at the cemetery.  Funeral arrangements were entrusted to McCluskie-Miller Funeral Home in Herrin.
